Harbour Master's office: extension 4410.
Background: The port of Dakar was established in 1856 after an act of the Second French empire and was designated as the station of the " Compagnie des Messageries Impériales " sailing toward the South America route bound from the New Continent to Europe.
Approach: The Port of Dakar has a vast water area, naturally sheltered by the Cape Verde peninsula and the Goree Island. Its exceptional inner water surface of 195 ha offers to the largest vessels a free moving area of 90 ha and 10 to 11 m of depth.
Formalities: The harbour master decides in what order should the vessels sail in or out of the harbour, the berth or the mooring buoy each vessel should berth at according to the dimension, the draft, the operations and according to the police regulations.
Shipping agents should inform 24 hours before, by the " AVARNAV " form, the day and time of their ship's arrival.
Police and health control are done after berthing.
